Search basics

10 questions

What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a site and its content so search engines like Google can find it, understand it, and rank it. It covers technical health, on-page content, and the signals other sites send about you.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so answer engines can lift a direct answer out of your page and show it. Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice assistants all work this way.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making content understandable and citable by generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini, so your site is used as a source in their answers.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO gets you ranked in a list of links. AEO gets your answer quoted directly in the results. GEO gets your site cited as a source inside an AI-generated answer. They overlap, but a page can succeed at one and fail at the others.
Do I still need SEO if I am doing AEO and GEO?
Yes. Traditional search still drives the majority of traffic for most sites, and the fundamentals that help Google understand your page also help answer engines and AI engines. AEO and GEO are additions to SEO, not replacements for it.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. Search behaviour is splitting, not disappearing. People still use Google for many queries, and AI answers frequently cite the same pages that rank well. What is changing is that ranking alone is no longer enough, because being quoted matters too.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine returns a direct answer rather than a list of links. Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice assistants are answer engines. They extract a specific passage from a page and present it as the answer.
What is a generative engine?
A generative engine produces an original answer using a language model, then usually cites the sources it drew from. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini are generative engines.
What is a citation in AI search?
A citation is when an AI engine references your site as a source in its answer, usually with a link. It is the AI-era equivalent of a ranking, and it can send real traffic and real credibility.
Why is my site not showing up in AI answers?
Usually one of four reasons: AI crawlers are blocked from reading your site, your content does not answer questions directly, your pages lack the structure engines rely on, or your topic authority is thin. All four are fixable.

AEO in practice

12 questions

How do I optimize a page for AEO?
State the answer to the page core question clearly within the first hundred words, use question-style headings, add structured FAQs, and keep passages self-contained so they make sense when lifted out of context.
Where should the answer appear on the page?
Early. If the answer is buried below an introduction, a scroll of context, and three tangents, an answer engine is far less likely to find and lift it. Answer first, then explain.
What is a TL;DR block and does it help AEO?
A TL;DR is a short summary of the key takeaways, usually near the top. It helps because it gives engines a clean, self-contained passage to extract, and it happens to be what impatient human readers want too.
Do FAQ sections help with AEO?
Yes, significantly. A well-structured FAQ pairs a clear question with a clear answer, which is exactly the shape an answer engine is looking for. Adding FAQPage schema makes that pairing machine-readable.
Should my headings be questions?
Where it fits naturally, yes. Question-style headings mirror how people actually search, which makes it easier for an engine to match a query to the right section of your page.
What is answer readiness?
Answer readiness is a measure of how prepared a page is to be quoted as a direct answer. It looks at whether the answer exists, whether it appears early, whether it is self-contained, and whether the structure supports extraction.
How long should an answer be to get featured?
Usually between 40 and 60 words for a snippet-style answer. Long enough to be complete, short enough to be liftable. You can expand underneath, but give the engine a concise version first.
Does formatting affect whether I get quoted?
Yes. Lists, tables, clear headings, and short paragraphs are all easier to parse and extract than a dense wall of text. Formatting is not decoration, it is machine-readability.
Can I optimize for featured snippets and AI Overviews at once?
Largely yes. Both reward the same things: a clear direct answer, early placement, clean structure, and supporting schema. Work done for one usually benefits the other.
What is a zero-click search?
A search where the user gets their answer without clicking through to any site. Zero-click results are rising, which is why being the cited source in that answer matters even when it does not produce a click.
Is it bad if AI answers my question and nobody clicks?
It is not ideal, but being the cited source still builds brand recognition and authority, and many users click through when they want depth. The worse outcome is not being in the answer at all.
How do I stop my answer being taken out of context?
Write passages that stand alone. If a paragraph only makes sense after reading the two before it, it is a poor candidate for extraction and a risky one if extracted anyway.

GEO and AI citation

15 questions

How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
Let its crawler read your site, answer real questions clearly, structure content so passages are self-contained, and build genuine topical depth. There is no switch to flip, but each of those removes a reason you are not being cited.
How do I get cited by Perplexity?
Perplexity surfaces sources prominently and favours pages that answer directly and are well-structured. Allow PerplexityBot to crawl you, answer the question early, and make your expertise on the topic obvious.
Can anyone guarantee AI citations?
No, and treat that promise as a red flag. No tool controls what an AI engine chooses to cite. What a good tool does is remove the structural reasons you are not being cited, which is the part you can actually control.
What is llms.txt?
It is an emerging convention, similar in spirit to robots.txt, for telling AI engines what your site is about and which content matters most. It is a signal, not a guarantee, but it costs nothing to publish.
Where does llms.txt go?
At the root of your domain, so it sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt. XypherSEO generates and manages it for you.
Do AI engines actually read llms.txt?
Adoption is early and uneven. Some engines and agents use it, some ignore it. It is worth publishing because the cost is near zero and the convention is gaining traction, but do not expect it to transform your visibility on its own.
What is entity clarity and why does it matter?
An entity is a specific thing your content is about: a product, a person, a concept, a place. Entity clarity means naming and classifying those things unambiguously so an engine knows exactly what your page covers rather than guessing.
What makes a passage quotable to an AI engine?
It stands alone, states something specific, does not depend on surrounding paragraphs to make sense, and is not hedged into meaninglessness. If you could paste it into a chat answer and it would read fine, it is quotable.
Does content length affect AI citation?
Depth matters more than length. A focused 900-word page that genuinely answers a question is more citable than a padded 3,000-word page that circles it. Padding actively hurts, because it dilutes the signal.
Do AI engines care about backlinks?
Indirectly. Backlinks influence which pages an engine considers authoritative, and authority influences whether you get cited. But structure and clarity matter more for GEO than they do for classic ranking.
What is the AECS framework?
AECS is our methodology for AI-era content. Answer means the page states its answer plainly. Entity means it is clear what things the page is about. Cluster means the page sits within connected related content. Structure means it is formatted so a machine can parse it.
Why does clustering matter for AI visibility?
A single page on a topic looks like an opinion. A connected set of pages covering a topic properly looks like expertise. Generative engines are more willing to cite a source that demonstrably knows the subject rather than one that touched it once.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?
That is a real decision with a real trade-off. Blocking protects your content from being used for training, but it also guarantees you will never be cited by that engine. If citation is the goal, you must let them read you.
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
If you want AI visibility, allow the ones tied to engines people actually use: GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. You can allow some and block others.
What is the difference between a training crawler and a search crawler?
A training crawler collects content to train future models. A search crawler fetches pages to answer a live query right now. Blocking training but allowing search is a common middle position, and the two use different user agents.

Classic SEO

20 questions

What is search intent and why does it matter?
Search intent is what the user actually wanted when they typed the query: to learn, to compare, to buy, or to navigate somewhere. Content that mismatches intent rarely ranks, no matter how well written it is.
How long should a meta description be?
Roughly 150 to 160 characters. Longer descriptions get truncated in the results. Write it for the click, not for the keyword, because it does not directly influence ranking but it heavily influences whether anyone clicks.
How long should a title tag be?
Around 50 to 60 characters, so it does not get cut off. Put the important words early, since the front of the title carries more weight both for engines and for the human scanning the results.
What is a canonical URL?
A canonical tells search engines which version of a page is the definitive one when several URLs show similar content. It prevents your own pages from competing with each other and splitting their signals.
What is a robots meta tag?
It tells search engines whether they may index a page and whether they may follow its links. Use it to keep thin, duplicate, or private pages out of the index without blocking them entirely.
What is the difference between robots.txt and a robots meta tag?
Robots.txt controls whether a crawler may fetch a URL at all. The robots meta tag controls what it may do with the page once fetched. Blocking a page in robots.txt can actually prevent engines from seeing a noindex tag on it.
Do I need an XML sitemap?
It helps, particularly on larger sites or new ones. A sitemap does not guarantee indexing, but it makes discovery faster and more reliable, especially for pages that are not well linked internally.
What is a 301 redirect?
A permanent redirect. It sends users and search engines from an old URL to a new one and passes on most of the ranking signals. Use it whenever a page moves or is replaced.
When should I use a 302 instead of a 301?
Only when the move is genuinely temporary and you intend to restore the original URL. If the change is permanent, use a 301, otherwise you leave ranking signals stranded on the old URL.
Why do 404 errors hurt SEO?
Individually they usually do not, since some 404s are normal. The damage comes when pages that used to rank now 404, because you lose their traffic and their signals. Monitoring 404s lets you catch and redirect those.
What is a soft 404 and why is it bad?
A soft 404 is a missing page that returns a 200 OK status instead of a real 404. It tells search engines the page exists when it does not, which wastes crawl budget and can get empty pages indexed.
What is crawl budget?
The amount of crawling a search engine is willing to do on your site. It matters mainly on large sites. Wasting it on broken pages, duplicates, and endless parameter URLs means your important pages get crawled less often.
What is schema markup?
Structured data that describes what your content is in a format machines can read. It does not directly boost rankings, but it helps engines understand your page and can qualify you for rich results.
Which schema types matter most?
For most sites: Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Organization, and BreadcrumbList. Choose based on what the page genuinely is. Marking up a page as something it is not is a policy violation, not a clever trick.
Does page speed affect rankings?
Yes, though it is one factor among many. Its bigger effect is usually on conversion, since slow pages lose people before they read anything. Fix speed for the user and the ranking benefit follows.
What are internal links and why do they matter?
Internal links connect your own pages to each other. They help engines discover content, they pass authority between pages, and they show how topics relate. Weak internal linking is one of the most common and most fixable SEO problems.
What is an orphan page?
A published page that no other page on your site links to. Crawlers find content by following links, so an orphan is effectively invisible, no matter how good it is.
What is keyword cannibalization?
When several of your own pages target the same query and compete with each other, splitting signals so none of them rank well. The usual fix is to consolidate them into one strong page and redirect the rest.
How often should I update old content?
When it is genuinely out of date or underperforming. Updating for the sake of a fresh date achieves nothing. Updating because the facts, examples, or advice have aged achieves a lot.
Does duplicate content get penalized?
There is no specific penalty, but duplicate content splits signals and forces engines to pick a version, which may not be the one you wanted. Canonicals and consolidation solve it.

Using XypherSEO

14 questions

What does XypherSEO actually do?
It covers SEO, AEO, and GEO in one WordPress plugin: metadata and snippet control, live scoring, schema, technical SEO tools, AI visibility controls, internal linking, and AI-assisted content generation.
Does XypherSEO replace Yoast or Rank Math?
It can. XypherSEO covers the classic SEO ground those plugins handle, and adds AEO and GEO, which they were never built for. Running two SEO plugins at once is not recommended.
Will XypherSEO slow my site down?
No. The analysis runs in the WordPress editor while you work, not on your visitors page loads. Your front end is unaffected.
Do I need an API key to use XypherSEO?
Only for the AI generation features, which are bring-your-own-key using Anthropic. Everything else works without a key. No AI calls are made unless you have supplied one.
Why bring your own API key instead of buying credits?
Because you keep control of both cost and output. Your key stays in your install, requests go straight to Anthropic, and there is no markup, no credit pack, and no vendor deciding how much you may write this month.
What is the difference between Free, Pro, and Ultimate?
Free covers the core SEO fundamentals. Pro adds the full AEO and GEO toolkit, AI generation, and advanced technical features. Ultimate adds the Chrome extension on top. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Is there a free version?
Yes. The free plan is genuinely usable rather than a crippled trial, and it stays free.
Do you offer refunds?
No. All XypherSEO sales are final. The plugin is delivered instantly as a digital product with your license key and download sent by email at purchase, so we do not offer refunds on any plan. Please ask us anything before you buy.
How do I get my license key?
It is emailed to you at purchase, along with your download link. You can also retrieve it any time from your customer portal.
Can I use one license on several sites?
That depends on the plan you buy. License terms and site limits are shown on the pricing page at checkout.
Does XypherSEO work with my theme?
Yes. It works with any standard WordPress theme, because it operates on your content and your site head rather than on your theme layout.
Does XypherSEO work with WooCommerce?
Yes, including Product schema for your store pages.
What is the AECS score I see on my posts?
It grades your content across Answer, Entity, Cluster, and Structure, the four things engines need in order to understand and cite a page. Every deduction tells you the specific thing to fix.
Where do I get support?
Email hello@xypherseo.com or use the contact page. Include your site URL, your plan, and the purchase email so we can help faster.

Measuring and reporting

7 questions

How do I know if AI engines are visiting my site?
Check your AI crawler log. WordPress gives you no visibility into bot traffic by default, Google Analytics does not track bots, and server logs need technical access. A crawler log inside your dashboard shows you which AI bots came and what they read.
Does Google Analytics show AI traffic?
It shows referral traffic from AI engines when a user clicks a citation link, but it does not show crawler visits. Those two things are very different and it is easy to confuse them.
What is AI referral traffic?
Visitors who arrive on your site by clicking a link inside an AI-generated answer, from sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, or gemini.google.com. It is the clearest proof that being cited actually sends people.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Typically weeks to months, depending on competition, site authority, and how broken things were to begin with. Anyone promising results in days is either lucky or lying.
How long does it take to start getting AI citations?
It varies widely, and honestly the ecosystem is too young for anyone to quote reliable timelines. What is predictable is that a site AI crawlers cannot read, or whose content has no extractable answers, will not be cited at all.
What should I actually measure for AEO and GEO?
Whether AI crawlers can reach you, whether they are visiting, whether your pages contain extractable answers, and whether AI referral traffic is arriving. Those are leading indicators you can act on.
Should I connect Google Search Console?
Yes. It is the most honest source of data about how Google actually sees your site: which queries you appear for, which pages get impressions, and where you are being crawled or blocked.

Technical and troubleshooting

14 questions

Why is my page not indexed by Google?
Common causes: a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical pointing elsewhere, the page being orphaned with no internal links, or simply that it is new and has not been crawled yet. Search Console will usually tell you which.
Why did my rankings suddenly drop?
Check in this order: a site change you made, a technical breakage such as redirects or noindex, a Google algorithm update, or a competitor improving. Sudden and total drops usually mean something broke rather than something changed algorithmically.
What is an indexing API and should I use it?
The Google Indexing API lets you tell Google that a URL has changed, which usually speeds up discovery. It does not guarantee indexing, and it does not force Google to rank you. It shortens the wait, nothing more.
How do I fix duplicate title tags?
Find them with a site audit, then rewrite each to be genuinely distinct. Duplicate titles usually signal that the underlying pages are too similar, so it is worth asking whether they should be one page instead.
What is a redirect chain and why is it bad?
When page A redirects to B, which redirects to C. Each hop adds latency and leaks a little signal. Point A directly at C instead.
What is a redirect loop?
When two pages redirect to each other endlessly, so the page never loads. It is always a bug, and it makes the page completely inaccessible to users and crawlers alike.
Should I use regex in my redirects?
Only when you need to move many URLs following a clear pattern, such as an entire folder. Regex redirects are powerful and easy to get catastrophically wrong, so test them before you deploy.
What is a breadcrumb and does it help?
Breadcrumbs show where a page sits in your site hierarchy. They help users navigate, they strengthen internal linking, and with BreadcrumbList schema they can appear in search results.
Do I need HTTPS for SEO?
Yes. HTTPS is expected, it is a ranking signal, and browsers actively warn users away from sites without it. There is no good reason to run a site on HTTP in 2026.
Does my robots.txt block AI crawlers by accident?
It happens far more often than people realise, usually because rules were copied from a template. A blanket disallow, or a rule aimed at one bot that catches others, can silently make you invisible to AI engines.
What happens if I block Googlebot by mistake?
Your pages fall out of the index, and traffic collapses. It is one of the most damaging single mistakes in SEO, and it is usually caused by a staging site robots.txt being pushed to production.
How do I check what a crawler sees on my page?
Fetch the page as a crawler would, without JavaScript, and look at what is actually in the HTML. If your content only appears after JavaScript runs, some crawlers will never see it.
Does JavaScript hurt SEO?
It can. Google can render JavaScript, but rendering is slower and less reliable than reading plain HTML, and many AI crawlers do not render it at all. Content that only exists after JS execution is content at risk.
What is server-side rendering and why does it matter?
It means the server sends complete HTML rather than an empty shell that JavaScript fills in. It matters because it guarantees every crawler, including ones that do not run JavaScript, can read your content.

Strategy and content

12 questions

Should I write for humans or for search engines?
For humans, with structure that machines can parse. That is not a compromise, it is the whole point. Content written purely for engines reads badly and increasingly ranks badly too.
Is AI-generated content bad for SEO?
Not inherently. Google judges the content, not the tool that made it. Thin, generic, unedited AI output performs badly because it is thin and generic, not because it is AI. AI used to draft something you then sharpen with real expertise performs fine.
Will Google penalize me for using AI to write?
Not for using AI. Google penalizes content produced at scale with no value regardless of how it was made. The line is usefulness, not authorship.
What is a topic cluster?
A group of connected pages covering one subject properly: a main page covering the topic broadly, and supporting pages going deep on specific parts, all linked to each other. It signals genuine expertise rather than a one-off post.
What is a pillar page?
The main page in a topic cluster. It covers the whole subject at a useful level and links out to the deeper pages that support it.
How many words should a blog post be?
As many as the topic honestly needs. Word count is not a ranking factor. Padding a 700-word answer into 2,000 words makes it worse, and dilutes exactly the passages an AI engine might have quoted.
Should I target keywords or questions?
Both, but questions increasingly matter more. People phrase queries as questions when they talk to AI, and a page structured around a real question is far more likely to be quoted as the answer.
What is E-E-A-T?
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is not a score you can see, it is a set of qualities Google evaluators look for. Showing who wrote something and why they are qualified is a practical way to demonstrate it.
Do author bios matter?
Yes, particularly on topics where expertise matters. A named author with real credentials and a real footprint is a trust signal for both search engines and generative engines deciding whether to cite you.
How do I find what to write about?
Start with the questions your customers actually ask. Support tickets, sales calls, and community threads are better sources than a keyword tool, because they contain real language and real problems.
Should I delete old underperforming content?
Sometimes. If it is thin, outdated, and has no traffic and no links, removing or consolidating it can strengthen the rest of the site. But check for backlinks first, and redirect rather than simply deleting.
Is it better to update an old post or write a new one?
Update when the page already has authority and the topic is the same. Write new when the angle is genuinely different. Splitting one topic across two pages usually just makes them compete with each other.
